Was it more Stanley and Livingstone, or Dad’s Army?
On Saturday the 2nd February, 30 intrepid explorers including winemakers, sommeliers and journalists set out to discover some of Marlborough’s most beautiful pinot noir vineyards. Avoiding the valley floor and main roads, the route had been carefully planned (over a few beers one night) to start with a glass of Nautilus Cuvee at the Calrossie vineyard in the Southern Wither Hills, then head up the Awatere towards Ballochdale for morning tea, then back over the Taylor’s pass towards Auntsfield, Yarrum, Outpost and finally into the Waihopai to finish up at the Churton Abyss vineyard.
Educational and entertaining, highlights included 3 fordings of the Awatere River (some more successful than others it has to be said!) and a refreshing dip in the river itself. All the guests raved about the day, so let’s hope we can repeat the experience again soon!
Wineries involved were: Nautilus Estate, Dog Point, Greywacke, Fromm, Spy Valley, Churton, Terravin, Villa Maria, Ballochdale and Auntsfield.
