ABOUT RENWICK VINEYARD
Seven hectares of classic stony 'Rapaura' soils, Renwick was our first vineyard and was purchased in 1992. This vineyard provides key blending components for both Nautilus Pinot Noir and Chardonnay along with small parcels of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Gruner Veltliner and Albarino.
Location: The middle of the Wairau Valley on State Highway 6.
Elevation: 40 metres above sea level.
Soil characteristics: Well drained stony alluvium.
Climate: Warmer and wetter than the Southern Valleys/Awatere. Early ripening.
Pinot Noir: Clones 114 and 115. Planted in 1997. This site gives opulent fruit flavours, typically raspberry and plums. It provides fruit lift and fragrance plus a late grainy tannin structure.
Sauvignon Blanc: Mass selection and clone 317. Flavours include ripe tropical fruit, grapefruit and passionfruit.
Chardonnay: Clone 15. Planted in 1987. Ripe stone fruit and citrus flavours are typical of this vineyard, giving great intensity and fresh acidity.
Pinot Gris: Clone GM2/15. Planted between 2000 and 2005. Flavours of ripe white peach and pear. Gewurztraminer: Colmar 1106 and Colmar 456 clones. Planted in 2005.
Gruner Veltliner: Clones 4/143 and 4/15. Planted in 2009.
Albarino: Mass selection and clones 635, 636 & 637. Planted in 2011.
